Westlea Primary School with Cambrian Slate

The re-roofing of Westlea Primary School shows how you can significantly improve both the appearance and the performance of a whole building when you select your materials carefully.

The Project

The Westlea Primary School has just under 300 pupils, including a Special Resourced Provision (SRP) for children who are physically disabled, and remained open throughout the project. The school is a low building and the roof is its most visible feature when viewed from the roads around it. The slate-like new roof, replacing the failing fibre cement tiles, is a significant improvement in appearance that a like-for-like replacement could not match.

Testimonials

The Aesthetics

“The roof is a very prominent feature of this school, a low-level building within close proximity to the main road, so when the original asbestos fibre cement tiles were failing, we wanted a solution that also enhanced the school’s appearance”

The Product

“We chose the Cambrian Slate because it’s a good-looking quality tile that suits the natural slate area and we wanted a manufacturer’s guarantee and technical support”

The Challenge

The Challenge

While every effort was made to carry out works while the pupils were not on site, the schedule required that The Complete Roofing Company continued working through the term.

Safety is always a priority, especially with physically disabled children on site, so careful liaison with the head teacher was essential to ensure that classes and play areas were unaffected.

The Solution

The Solution

The school’s roof consists of 16 hips and eight valleys, all 10m long, so TCRC’s operatives laid the roof from right to left, until they reached the hip from which they started. Working this way – clockwise – simplified the task of keeping children and roofing works safely apart.

BMI Redland Cambrian Slate reclaimed natural slate tiles upgraded the appearance of the whole school, were backed by a 15-year roof system guarantee and they were quick and simple to lay.

The speed at which the Cambrian Slate interlocking tiles can be laid minimised the time during which the pupils were exposed to the hazards of construction.

The Impact

The Impact

Both Hookway and the school were happy that the contract was completed on time and within the budget. The clients’ final assessment comes from the head teacher, who having awarded the Hookway and TCRC teams with the Headteacher’s Award for Good Work, says “The school looks like a new building and the roof is a stunning piece of workmanship, which complements the current regeneration of the school site”.
