This school in Merseyside needed a completely new roof. BMI provided contractors Helix Roofing with the BMI AeroDek Robust Plus lightweight metal roofing solution, because it is suitable for pitches as low as 12° as well as being highly secure, durable and weather-resistant with a 40-year guarantee.
The contractor was impressed with the ease and speed at which the tiles could be installed despite it being their first time using the tile.
Project name: Sutton Academy
Surveyors: Lancaster Maloney
Sub contractor: Helix Roofing
“This is the first time we’ve used this product and it’s been a complete success. It’s very quick and easy to install and, because it’s pliable, it works well on details which can be formed as you go ”
- David O’Down, Director for Helix Roofing
“There were a lot of positives in specifying BMI AeroDek tiles, particularly speed. These tiles look like the existing roof so there was no need for any planning permission and they’re designed for low pitches”
- Stuart Jenness, of surveyors Lancaster Maloney
Sutton Academy required a pitched roof system that could meet a number of challenges. The tile needed to be suitable for a pitch as low as 14°, and that could match the existing concrete tiles. The project demanded a roof solution that could also accommodate the complexities of many hips, valleys and vertical elements featured on this project.
The chosen solution was the BMI AeroDek Robust Plus tile, suitable for pitches as low as 12° as well as being highly secure, durable and weather-resistant with a 40-year guarantee.
BMI AeroDek tiles are fast to install as they are produced in tile strips, so they require fewer fixings. A typical 65m² roof will require only 139 AeroDek tiles compared to 631 concrete interlocking tiles.
The strength of the AeroDek tiles was also a consideration, as the school is composed of one and two storey buildings, AeroDek metal tiles are more resistant to damage and the odd football going on the roof won’t cause any problems.
The project was a success, with little to no disruption to the school or its pupils, meaning that education could continue as usual. The school now has the peace of mind that their staff and pupils will be protected for many years to come.
This project was supported with the expertise of the BMI Technical team. They inspected the project regularly and helped everyone involved to complete the project with as little impact upon the occupants as possible.
