There had been problems with the existing roof over the City Services Directorate’s depot in the Whitley suburb of Coventry. It had been leaking for 20 years and the roof was in a bad state of repair. Coventry City Council had rejected temporary roofing and with existing low rooflight upstands the only practical solution was a complete reroof. This was an ideal opportunity to upgrade the insulation, and remove any redundant rooflights, while upgrading the remainder.
Having won the contract, Brindley’s first task was to determine the best way to re-roof a fully operational council depot, with minimal disruption to its operations, given the facility was in use 24/7. In close coordination with the council teams, working offices were moved, and care was taken when removing the existing unsafe Georgian wired-glass rooflights and installing the new modern replacement units, whilst making sure the building remained both safe and watertight during the process.
The existing roof system was stripped down to the metal decking and replaced with a full waterproofing warm roof system. Once the roof was clean, the crowns of the metal deck were primed with Icopal bitumen primer. The system which followed comprised a Total Torch Vapour Control Layer, 130mm PIR insulation, a Total Torch Vapour Dispersion Layer, and finished with a Tecnatorch SBS green mineral capsheet.
The roof, measuring a total of 1,200m², was completed on schedule after the team worked after-hours and at weekends to avoid disturbing key areas of the building below. The work was regularly inspected by Icopal’s Technical Installation Quality Inspector to ensure quality was maintained, and a very satisfied client is now looking forward to many years of leak-free performance.
