Why I believe in apprenticeships

When I started out as an apprentice roofer back in 2006, I had no idea that it would lead to me running my own business. But that’s the thing about apprenticeships: they give you more than just a trade. They give you a future.

With the BMI Apprentice of the Year final coming up, now is a great moment to shout about everything that apprenticeships can offer. For me, they’re the best possible route into roofing. You get hands-on experience, you build real knowledge, and you learn the discipline that comes with being part of a working team.

Crucially, you can also see a career path ahead of you. That clarity can be life-changing, especially for people who’ve perhaps come out of school not really knowing what’s next.

A lot of my apprentices didn’t click with the classroom. Because of that, some left school without decent qualifications. But that doesn’t mean they don’t have potential.

An apprenticeship helps them find that potential. It builds their confidence, their resilience. It teaches them to lead, to adapt and to speak with pride about what they do. I’ve seen it time and again – and I’ve lived it myself.

It’s not about winning (although that’s always nice!). It’s about growth. Our apprentices come back with more confidence, better communication skills and a stronger sense of pride in what they do. Their experiences – learning to speak up, present themselves, handle pressure – are invaluable. It’s all stuff they’ll need when talking to future clients, or running their own businesses.

Supporting Apprentices

At Taylor Roofs, we try to give back by taking on apprentices each year. It’s not always easy. There are a lot of challenges in the industry right now, including rising costs and an ongoing labour shortage. But we can’t afford to let apprenticeships fall by the wayside. They’re about creating the next generation of roofers. With the skills gap we’re facing in construction, we all need to play our part.

I’m always proud to say that I started out as an apprentice. I’m even prouder to help others take the same path. Apprenticeships aren’t just a good option. They’re the best investment we can make in the future of our industry.
