Kingsbarns Distillery with Old Hollow Pantile

Built in the 1800s, it became the vision of Douglas Clement, founder of Kingbarns Distillery, to restore the derelict Farm Steading and convert it into a Distillery.

An Old Farm Building restoration project by Douglas Clement and the Wemyss Family, turned into a new Whiskey Distillery and Visitor Centre.

The site, in the East Neuk of Fife, required a roofing solution which captured the traditional whiskey-making heritage of Scotland.

The solution for the project was the BMI Redland Old Hollow Pantile in Vintage Blue.

The Challenge

The Challenge

The skill required to ensure the new roof covering lined up with the 200-year-old sandstone walls, and also to keep the building watertight, proved extremely challenging with constant time and care required.

One of the most striking architectural features at Kingsbarns Distillery is the ‘Doocot’ (the Scottish word for dovecot). This was originally a free-standing structure, and with its Adam style crenulations and Gothic detailing, it looks to the world like a miniature fortified tower.

Another prominent feature is the hexagonal shape of the roof that covers the restaurant and seating area below where tourists frequently venture to to try their famous whisky.

The Solution

The Solution

The project was worked on for three years, with close attention paid to the traditional methods and materials used to restore the original architecture. Simpson Brown Architects, who are specialists in this field, chose BMI Redland Old Hollow Pantile in Vintage Blue due to its antiquated aesthetic and similarity to the original tiles used.
